Wood avens, Spice
Wood avens (Geum urbanum) is a perennial herb in the family Rosaceae. It is also known as herb Bennet, colewort and St. Benedict's herb. Woods avens grows in woodland and hedgerows in shady places in Europe and the Middle East. Wood avens, 20-60 cm tall, bears bright yellow, five-petaled flowers, 1-2 cm in diameter, from May to August. The fragrant and hermaphrodite flowers are pollinated by bees. The burred fruits are dispersed by being caught in the fur of passing animals. Wood avens' root is used as a spice in soups and also for flavoring ale. Wood avens is used to treat mouth ulcers, heart disease, diarrhoea, and halitosis, and also to prevent colic. ![]() Wood avens Author: H. Zell (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported) | ||
