Kalonji, Spice

  About Tim & Esther

Kalonji (Nigella sativa) is the fruit of Nigella sativa, a species of flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae. It is native to southwest Asia. Kalonji is also known as Fennel flower, nutmeg flower, Roman coriander, blackseed,or black caraway.

Nigella sativa grows 20-30 cm tall, with finely divided, linear leaves. The pale blue and white flowers are delicate, with 5-10 petals. The fruit is a large and puffed capsule, with 3-7 follicles. Each follicle contains numerous black seeds, which are used as a spice.

Kalonji has a pungent smell and a bitter taste, used primarily in confectionery and liquors.
