Dill seed, Spice
Dill seed is the seed of the dill plant (Anethum graveolens), a short-lived perennial herb of the family Apiaceae. It is brown, flat, 4-5 mm long and 1 mm thick, oval-shaped, straight to slightly curved with longitudinal ridged surface. Dill seed imparts a lemony-pine essence and the flavor is closed to that of caraway and fennel. It is used as a spice, and is traditionally used to soothe the stomach after meals. It has a stronger flavor than dill weed (dill leaf and stem). Dill seed is widely used in Russian, German, Indian and Scandinavian cuisines. Dill seeds are usually added to meat dishes, condiments and bread. Dill seeds should be stored in a covered container in a cool dry place. Dill seeds contain polyacetylenes, a chemical that may have cancer-fighting properties, that slows down the growth of tumors as well as preventing the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast. ![]() Dill seeds Author: Miansari66 (public domain) | ||
